About Us

Hoosier Heartland unites people in urban and rural areas who are committed to wisely managing and utilizing our natural resources.

The Hoosier Heartland Resource Conservation and Development Council (HHRCD) is one of 375 RC&Ds across the nation. RC&Ds are nonprofit, 501c3 organizations that work to enable local people to solve local concerns.

The general purpose of RC&Ds is to accelerate the conservation, development, and utilization of natural resources, improve the general level of economic activity, and to enhance the environment and standard of living in designated RC&D areas.

Since 1962, RC&Ds have been publicly funded and staffed. In the fall of 2011, public support was abruptly terminated. Many RC&Ds, including Hoosier Heartland, have been able to continue their good work through the dedication of their volunteer committees, private funding sources, and the support of the communities they work to benefit.

There are 375 RC&Ds nationwide. Although all share similar goals, the structure and actions of each RC&D is unique and relevant to its region. Indiana contains nine Councils. Hoosier Heartland in particular serves a ten-county region in central Indiana.

Our Mission: We are a unique organization that helps people care for, conserve and protect natural resources in a way that will improve the area's economy, environment, and living standards.

Our Role: Hoosier Heartland, like all RC&Ds, provides a framework for partnerships and alliances to develop between diverse groups: local citizens, government agencies, and technical experts.

We are a liason between communities/citizens and government, working to identify and secure needed services and assistence to solve local natural resource concerns.

We believe in local control and wisely-planned development. Local residents are in the best position to identify ways to enhance their communities' quality of natural resources, economy, and envrionment. Wise land use requires taking into consideration the needs and value of all natural resources: soil and water, air and plants, humans and animals.
