The Hoosier Heartland RC&D Backyard Conservation committee is focused on a variety of “greening efforts” that can be practiced in our very own backyards. We encourage small practices like composting and mulching, as well as larger practices like tree and prairie plantings, rain gardens, and wildlife habitat.

Our purpose is to provide landowners with access to a variety of educational resources and technical assistance to improve the natural resources, wildlife habitat, and quality of life provided by their property.

Our Current Projects Include:

Indy Free Tree Give Away Recap

Click here to see how the Arbor Day tree give away in Downtown Indianapolis went this year! This event was a part of the Plant A Million effort to see a million or more mostly native trees planted in Central Indiana. Check out the Plant A Million website for more information on the project!

Upcoming Endeavors:

  • Offering “Backyard Conservation Tip Sheets” on various conservation practices

  • Creating a “Your Yard, Your Shrubs” booklet

  • Developing a “Building With Nature” publication to discuss how to conserve trees during development/construction

If you support Backyard Conservation, contact the Hoosier Heartland RC&D office for details on how you can become involved: (317) 290-3250 or hhrcd@hhrcd.org.
